Painting the Undercoat…

Session 2: Getting Started

Today I began my first session with Icon, the Wheaten Terrier.  The first step in painting is making sure I get the values correct. Value is the darks and lights of a picture…as in a black and white photo.  This is not a very pretty stage because this is the time that mainly dark paint is going on the canvas.  This is a very important step as the subject will start to come to life after this initial undercoat painting and I will begin build the colors and detail.  It is called bringing the dark to the light…appropriately named!  Here is the completion of this first step of the portrait.

Step 1: Undercoat painting of Icon

I need to let him dry completely before I go to Step 2, building the colors and layers of paint.  I hope you are finding this interesting watching the process and how it works with painting my special pet portraits.  Until next time……
