The Art of Being an Artist

“Art is not what you see, but, what you make others see,” Edgar Degas

Being an artist is “Special”.  I did not pick art, art picked me and to me that makes us very special people.  I often hear “I could never do what you do, it takes a special kind of person to do what you do!” They may be correct and there really is no explanation for it and I take it as a compliment. In my mind, I feel like I don’t have any other choice. I just wake up everyday and keep working towards my dream.  In thinking about this word “Special,” I thought I would write what I feel are 5 things that  make artists special, including, but not limited too, myself.

Oscar wilde quote

The artist is nothing without the gift, butthe gift is nothing without the work ~ Oscar Wilde

1. Artist are Courageous

Most people don’t realize how much courage it takes for an artist to show their work to people. Courage, as defined by Mark Twain, “is not the lack of fear, but rather being able to move forward in spite of it.”  People must understand that “being an artist,” is not a career or a profession or a way to make a living, any more than you would expect the fact that you have brown eyes and blonde hair will enable you to make a living.  Being an artist is courageous because most artists are constantly redefining themselves and it an integral part of who they are as individuals, it’s NOT a job, NOT a career, NOT a profession and NOT something you chose. It choses you!

2. Ability to Express Themselves

It is what you do that truly counts.  Being an artist means putting your best foot forward each day and to create things that makes a difference; whether that difference is for you, or for others.  Being able to bare your soul for others to pick at, not knowing what will befall upon you as you put your work out there.  Being unsure if what you do will resonate with others, but you need to say something all the same.  We have a fear of the unknown, but are willing to take a chance… to jump in to do the work anyway.

3. Art is at the Core of their Lives

Artists eat, sleep and drink art! They inevitably find a way to carve out time in their day for making and marketing their art.  Whether they work at another full-time job, that job (if not related to their art) is secondary. Their real job is one of being an artist.

4. Artist are Resilient

Artists know that success does not happen overnight but they live the journey. Art requires hard work but creating to an artist is not hard work. Most artists understand that things don’t always work out the way they expect. When mistakes are made, they focus on solutions, not regrets. They learn from experience and experimentation to improve on any success they have.Art quote_1

5. Artist Flow!

Artist have the ability to lose themselves in being creative.  Time is of no essence!  Work is not work!  Being able to get absorbed in something you love is truly a gift.  Days will go by where I don’t know what time it is or what day it is.  I sometimes lose myself completely.  This is a gift because I hear so many people complain that they are bored or they hate their job.  As an artist, this will never happen to you.  Yes, we get artists block, and yes we create deadlines for our work…but for the most part, we are happy just creating and that is truly special.

All Great points. I am thinking more throughout art history. The people that were special, the famous artist of the past all did one thing the same. They were not known because of amazing skills that were more advanced than the one before him. But, they broke away from the mainstream and what everyone else was doing at the time.
